Landscape and Memory

Pictures are being hung for the Landscape and Memory Exhibition.  I can't be in Yorkton right now, so it's interesting to see how my drawings look on the wall.

Evil Takes a Coffee Break

Finally finished my drawing.  Interpret it how you wish.  My favorite part is the wedding ring.

Sara: Hiding in plain sight

Drawing of Sara (my daughter Kathryn's friend).

The photo I drew it from was taken by another friend (Brayden).

I think I'll put it into the local art show coming up.

New Drawing in Conte

Got some conte in Regina, so I was anxious to try it out.  It isn't for all pictures (the way I use it anyways) but I do like it now and then.
Conte 18x24
Francis is like my Michael used to be - he refuses to sleep.  So basically, he will sleep when and where he drops - and get up in about 15 minutes - and poof - that's it for today!  Yup - brings back memories.

I am just trying to get a few things together to put in to our local gallery, but I'm just not sure which ones I'm going to end up choosing.  This is kinda different for me - so I might end up putting this one in.  I'm working on another drawing as well - one of Kathryn's friends.

Finally finished

Finally finished my contemporary memento more drawing.

WIP - work in progress

It might look like I haven't been drawing much lately, but in fact I have.  I just haven't finished a few things here, so I haven't posted them.  I started out doing a picture of Michael as a zombie and quite enjoyed doing it.  I'm not sure how to finish it so I started on a picture of Heather - with the same memento mori theme and actually I liked it a lot.  I decided to not finish that at the moment because I wanted to do it on a large paper - so I redid it.  I wanted the size, but sheesh - its so slow going on the larger paper.

At any rate, I've struggled with the softness of the paper and I've got things down where I want them.  Now I have to go over it and do the last layer - to get in the details.  It's so darn hard to do details on this paper!  Its hard to describe why my technique doesn't fit with the paper.  All I can say is it crumbles up on the details, so when you look at the picture, its like looking through a foggy plexiglass.

I hope to get down to business and finish the thing up today.  I used to be able to do an entire picture in one day and with this paper - it will take me all day (or maybe more) to do the details in this.  But I'll try....

WIP work in progress

After my over the top aggressive drawing the other day, I've been trying to redeem myself by starting on a "nice quiet" drawing tonight.

Ahhh - this feels much better.

Heather was modeling the headscarf for me for the previous drawing, so I thought I'd try doing her.  I'm usually not too successful drawing Heather but this one seems to be turning out okay.  So far so good.  Plus - again - I'm using a completely different paper.  I don't know what's up with me - trying all these different papers lately.  Anyhow... I'll try to get around to finishing her up tomorrow.

Good Fences make Good Neighbors

Finally finished my big drawing.  I like the fact that its twice the size of what I normally do, but the paper was SO incredibly difficult to work with!  I have a companion piece to do, but I just don't have the stamina to work on that very soft paper again for the moment.  I got a lot of fantastic suggestions for the title - as requested - and I think for this one - its "Good Fences make Good Neighbors".  If it wasn't for the paper, I would have been tempted to draw in a proper fence and background on this one.

WIP more Red Hat Ladies

A work in progress - I was just itching to start this one!  (But why do I always end up starting a drawing at midnight?  Then its so hard to put down.)  I think it will turn out.  Its bigger than what I usually do.  I just adore these red hat ladies!

Oh right - plus I have my other fellow sitting around looking at me wanting to get finished.  I just HAD to start the two ladies first though - its a bit of an experiment, as its a bit big to handle, but things seem to be working out alright.  (I can't sit at a desk or easel for long because of back issues.)

Red Hats in Black and White

Finally got back to my Red Hat Lady.  (There just seems to be so many other things to do.  My husband says I need to hire staff to help me do all the things I want to do in my retirement haha.)  Anyhow... there wasn't much to do on it, but it was just a matter of getting back to it.  I hate taking more than a couple of days per drawing.

Murphy's Law of "extra parts"

We took the Pencil Paparazzi down (community pARTners gallery Yorkton) and I'm looking forward to seeing what they're going to have up for the next show.  It was a great experience - I've never had a solo show before.   Thanks everyone who helped and thanks to those who came out to see it.  It was a lot of fun!

We only really ended up with one small problem at the end.   You know how when you take your computer or your toaster or your vacuum cleaner apart and you have one thing left over?  Well, that's kinda what happened here.  We heard that someone had apparently arranged to purchase this drawing, but none of us can figure out who it was, or how they went about making those arrangements.  At any rate - if I took your picture away on you - then sorry about that.  You'd better contact me or the gallery.  It wasn't paid for, so its not a big deal - I'd just hate for someone to come back looking for the picture they thought they arranged to buy.

Pencil Paparazzi at community pARTners gallery
There's been a little delay in getting the next show up at the community pARTners gallery, so the Pencil Paparazzi is still hanging.  Someone picked up a drawing they had purchased and there was an empty spot, so we hung up a different one.  I'm not sure when the new show will be there.  In the meantime...

I chose a large drawing of a woman in her traditional jingle dress holding up an I-pad.  I really like how "the old and the new" are played out at the pow wows.

Work in Progress - Red Hat Lady

I got some great photos at the Red Hat meeting and was able to start on a drawing.  I hope I can get back to it in the next day or two, as it isn't going to take too much time to finish now.

I'll have to put in the table she's leaning on of course, and you know how I hate putting in backgrounds and furniture, but I don't always have a choice.  The details in her hat and clothing will be fun though.  Believe it or not - I had the most trouble with her hair of all things.  Hair usually isn't a problem for me but for some reason it was on this drawing.  Oh well.

Don't you just love the hats?  I knew when I saw this woman, she reminded me of Degas' painting.  But Degas was trying to convey solitude and loneliness in his picture - which isn't my intention here.  Although I might copy his idea of having the table "floating".

L'Absinthe or The Absinthe Drinker, by Edgar Degas, 1876.  The painting is at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris.

24x30 pencil and charcoal

Finally got around to finishing my drawing of George.  He'll be 90 years old soon - he sure doesn't look it!

Work in Progress

Working on George now.  He was very relaxed.  He's an interesting person to draw - and he's easy to do too. He'll be 90yrs old in a couple of months.

My biggest problem will be putting the chair in.  I don't like putting in backgrounds, furniture, etc. but he is leaning against his chair, so I'd better include it.

Finished Jamie

Jamie 24x30 pencil and charcoal

Work in Progress

Got to work on my "Jamie in cow hat" drawing today for a bit - its coming along.  Hopefully I can get it done tomorrow because on Tuesday I have an appointment with a wonderful couple - I'm going to take their photos for future drawings.  She is an artist, so the posing part should work out - now its just up to me to take some half decent photos.

Yorkton This Week Photo

It was nice of the Yorkton This Week to put in a photo of the Gallery Reception.

Lynn Strendin, left, greets guests during the official opening of her exhibition, the first of 2014, at pARTners Gallery in the Yorkton Public Library. The collection of pencil and charcoal portraits of everyday people is showing until the end of January.

There were about 25 people in attendance - pretty good attendance for such a cold day!

Pencil Paparazzi Reception

Thank you to all who braved this crazy crazy weather and came out to the Pencil Paparazzi Reception today.  (For anyone who had planned on coming but didn't because of the weather - I completely understand!)

Work in progress

By popular demand...  people apparently want to see Jamie with the cow hat - so I started on it tonight.

Well, I guess if you have a cow hat - you should wear it - and how can I really not draw it??

Jamie is so much fun to draw.  I hope this turns out.
