Drawing #18

This is a quick drawing of Ranji. How beautiful is this woman hey? Inside and out.

I was reading about a man named Rikyu (lived in the 1500s) who made tea cups and perfected the Japanese tea ceremony, utilizing a concept called wabi-sabi. I realized I usually think about these types of things when I do my drawings, especially the quick ones. (things like imperfection, incompleteness, simplicity, modesty etc).

Since I’m neither Buddhist nor Japanese, I tried to find some Swedish concepts that could describe quick, simple, imperfect, yet genuine drawings, but I couldn’t. Actually, I couldn’t even find an English word that fits that style. The Swedes have a term “Lagom” which is close to “balance”, and the Danish people have “Hygge” which is like cosy. But the wabi-sabi is more fitting – so until I find something more descriptive, then here’s “My wabi-sabi rendition of Ranji”.

 EXPOSE YOURSELF 2018

Not my usual style I know, but I always enjoy submitting something to the Expose Yourself Exhibition.  They are a fun bunch of people and I get to do art I don’t otherwise have anything to do with.  So I got word that I got accepted for their 2018 Exhibition and I will be mailing out my picture next week.  The show will be held at the Art Council’s gallery in Powell River British Columbia March 23 - April 08th.

EXPOSE YOURSELF 2017

Just realized I didn't put anything in my blog about a drawing that I had in Powell River in March.

My drawing: "Cupid with Black Wings". Thank you my very energetic Kelly and his cute-as-a-button friend Chelsea.

Drawing #15

Not a bingo buddy, but I found this in my pile of drawings I started years ago but never finished.  So I decided to work on it.  So here is my daughter's friend Jessica and her son Kyron

Update:  Its not baby Kyron, its Jessica's daughter Astrid.

Drawing #14

Here's something crazy I've been working on.  I tired and tried to draw Sarah's baby Sebastien, but it just wasn't working - which shouldn't have been a surprise, because I don't do children all that well usually.  The drawing was initially a lot larger, and Sarah's top reminded me of sand on the beach, there were marks on her tummy that looked like waves - and the hand of course was the mountain - so basically by the time I was well into the drawing, it insisted that it was going to be a landscape.  By 3am, I couldn't fight any longer, and basically the baby won the argument (like they always do at 3am) and I said "okay then - you are going to be a landscape".

I still didn't like it and I really had the urge to put in some color because babies are so mottled and are a strange combination of colors - so I gave in to that urge as well.  Okay - so now I'm done, and it still isn't working, but its as done as its going to be and I got it out of my system.  I won't have to do another baby, landscape or color picture in a very long time.  Can I get back to my bingo guys now???  Please?? (or maybe - just maybe that chicken I've had my eye on?)

Yes - this is in color.  Ouch - ouch - my eyes!
