SPRING INTO ART: Battlefords Art Club Show and Sale

Artist's Statement:

I lost my dad recently, and while looking through his photo box, I realized how desperately we try to hang on to images and memories.  Most of the old pictures were stained and tattered.  The phrase “earning your wrinkles” came to mind.  What did those paper folds and creases represent?  Perhaps life isn’t always clean and perfect.

I decided to do these two pencil portraits in a timeworn “snapshot” style.  I wanted to catch my dad’s friends in a moment and put them into an environment that would be respectful of the imperfect and often-difficult times that they have had to endure.

WEEK #17

Woman playing her accordion    24x30
Well, I'm finally getting to where I want to be with my drawings.  Took me long enough!  So I guess I'm saying that I'm actually quite happy with this one.  I wanted the background to look a little beat up - like it was taken from an old photo, but because of the subject matter, it looks to me like Mary is in a crowded smokey pub, playing one last tune.  Go home guys - its closing time!

WEEK #16

My daughter in law     18x26
This is Jamie posing for me when we went out for dinner - taken in the restaurant's lobby with a lot of reflective glass around.  I like drawing her - she's always got that beautiful dreamy look about her.  Plus she's cooperative and doesn't seem to mind getting her picture taken.  That's me in the reflection snapping the pic.

WEEK #15

In front of the Beaver Hotel      24x30
My two daughters posed in front of The Beaver on the weekend.  The girls in the drawing don't look like my daughters in real life, but I was more interested in the Beaver sign - I've been waiting quite a while for someone to stand in front of it so I could do a drawing.
